Discord Data Leak Following Support Hack
Sunday, 14 May 2023
A data breach at VoIP and instant messaging platform Discord has leaked user email addresses, messages exchanged with Discord support, and attachments sent as part of support tickets. The breach was purportedly a result of a third-party support agent getting compromised.
The full extent of the data breach is not yet known at this stage, though depending on the number of email addresses and private messages compromised, this could constitute one of the largest data breaches of all time. 150 million people use Discord monthly, utilising over 19 million different Discord servers.
Discord responded by disabling the compromised support account once the breach was discovered. "Due to the nature of the incident, it is possible that your email address, the contents of customer service messages and any attachments sent between you and Discord may have been exposed to a third party," Discord said in a communique sent to affected users. "As soon as Discord was made aware of the issue, we deactivated the compromised account and completed malware checks on the affected machine."

Following the incident, Discord reached out to the customer service partner to work on implementing measures to ensure such incidents won't happen again in the future. "While we believe the risk is limited, it is recommended that you be vigilant for any suspicious messages or activity, such as fraud or phishing attempts," the company said.
